Employee Spotlight: Landon Carlson, Sales Manager

Landon Carlson knew new home sales was for him right from the start. After graduating high school, Landon started working for an Edmonton-area home builder as a sales assistant. Within six months Landon earned his own sales area and has been building his career in the industry ever since.

“I’d say what I like most [about new home sales] is working with customers every day. Everyone is different and I love helping each person who comes in find the right fit [in a new home].”

A Customer-Focused Career

With more than 12 years’ experience in new home sales, Landon is no stranger to matching customers with their dream homes. “I make sure to listen to the needs and wants of each customer instead of listing all the features we have available. Once I’ve listened to what they want, we find a style of home that fits their needs.”

Working at Averton

Today, Landon is a sales manager with Averton and has been with the company for about a year-and-a-half. “We have a great sales team and I enjoy working with everyone here,” says Landon. “Averton is a small, growing company, in Edmonton at least, so I’ve been able to get to know everyone who works here more personally.”

According to Landon, Averton encourages employees to get to know each other. “We have lots of company functions. Last week, we volunteered at the Lois Hole Hospital helping out in the healing garden on the roof, then Averton took us out for dinner.”

With such strong experience in Edmonton’s new home market, Landon can say for certain that Averton stands out as a builder in the area. “The biggest thing that sets us apart is our designs. We have some really cool projects that are unlike anything the Edmonton market has seen before, like our townhome projects. We’re doing things that no one else has done yet in Edmonton.”

In fact, the Presidio 4 townhome ― part of Averton’s Pivot development in the Rutherford neighbourhood ― is Landon’s favourite new home model. “We have amazing three- or four-story units that go up to 2,000 square feet, which is big for a townhome. We can make the entire fourth story a master bedroom and there’s an option to put in an elevator,” he says. “This is not your typical townhome. If you want what no one else has, this is it.”  

Helping New Home Buyers in an Uncertain Economy

Even after a customer has found the perfect home model for their lifestyle, they have to make sure it’s the right time for them to buy. The economy remains a common concern among today’s potential new home buyers. “Right now there’s a lot of doubt about the economy. [A home] is a huge investment and, with the mortgage rules changing, it’s harder to get approved,” says Landon. “We are able to help customers through our POWER program. If [a recent customer] loses their job, we help with mortgage payments for six months. Our preferred lenders also give [our customers] longer rate holds while they’re building their house and we have our price guarantee, which also helps put our customers’ minds at ease.”

Choosing Averton

With so many options available in today’s new home market, it’s important for customers to be confident they’ve chosen the right builder. “Once in awhile I get asked ‘why Averton,’” says Landon. “I’d say it’s the POWER program, it’s our designs and we do our best to make the changes the customer wants. As a company we are always talking about how we can improve. Our plans are so different from everyone else ― we’re the lifestyle choice.”
